In more than 35 years of service, Support Center for Child Advocates (Child Advocates) has become a subject matter expert in child welfare and advocacy, with notable expertise in training advocates. This expertise has challenged us to address the acute need for those serving children and families in the justice system to be fully informed of the range and complexity of issues impacting the health, safety and well-being of children and families and properly trained to competently, effectively and successfully represent their interests.
Child Advocates has long wished to respond to the needs of advocates throughout Pennsylvania with a statewide training program that would coordinate the region’s knowledge-base. Through the establishment of the Center for Excellence in Advocacy (CEA), headquartered at Child Advocates, we will be positioned to expand our training capacity to respond to systemic needs in the following ways:
1) deliver advanced training to lawyers, judges, and court administrators statewide;
2) offer leadership, curriculum development and programs to provide substantive knowledge, sharpen trial and appellate skills, and offer contemporary best-practice approaches to child and parent representation;
3) develop and refine program evaluation models that measure learning, gauge participant satisfaction, and reveal what is popular and effective in training programs; and
4) create a distance-learning program so that colleagues from around the state can participate in a collegial learning experience without the burden and expense of travel.
We seek to provide a comprehensive, cutting edge, sustainable resource for child advocates working on behalf of children and families whose lives are impacted by the judicial system throughout Pennsylvania. When fully implemented, CEA will improve the lives and well-being of abused and neglected children in Pennsylvania child welfare proceedings by improving the practice of lawyers and other child-serving professionals.
The Center for Excellence in Advocacy looks forward to serving you. Be on the lookout for upcoming trainings!
